Discover an all-new race of creatures called Firelings that live in a realm near the planet's core, based on official character designs by Brian Froud.
Years have passed since the events of the original film, and though Jen and Kira have ruled Thra as King and Queen, bringing Gelfling back to the land, they have become distracted by power and can no longer feel or see the needs of the world the way they once did.

Comic Spectrum - Adam Brunell Feb 25, 2017

The Power of the Dark Crystal has started out to be a colorful and intriguing beginning to a possibly intense story. The art is vast and vibrant; the writing is so well done it's as if I am back watching the first Dark Crystal movie being narrated by Joseph O'Conor. In the first issue we don't get a lot of time with the original heroes, but there are appearances from other memorable characters from the movie. This comic is the first issue of a twelve issue part story and is the sequel to the movie that devoted fans have been waiting for. I'm excited and on board for this series! Read Full Review

If you are of a certain age you will probably remember going to the cinema to see dark, muppet movie The Dark Crystal. It will no doubt have captivated you and drawn you into its slow paced, grim looking fantasy world. For years rumours have been abound about a sequel, including the proposition of a CGI follow up made on a tight budget. For good or ill, the sequel didnt materialise but now, thanks to Boom! Studios, the continuation of the story is available in comic book format. Read Full Review

Leave it to comics to completely knock out of the park the long gestating sequel to a beloved Jim Henson production. Though being attached to a well known IP certainly doesn't hurt, the work that Simon Spurrier and the Matthews turn in here are teeming with new ideas and new visual designs that are informed by the original movie but not chained to them. By melding both the new and the recognizable, The Power of the Dark Crystal #1 is a bold experiment that could very well turn into a bold hit. Read Full Review

Slackjaw Punks - Garret Tumey Feb 21, 2017

This issue was totally awesome! I was not a super fan of The Dark Crystal, but I freaking love Jim Henson! His imaginative characters and incredibly complex stories made an empire, plus made his and many of his creationshousehold names. This series will not disappoint fans of the movies, because well, it's based off a script written by Henson himself. It was originally meant to be a movie, but because of many different problems, it was never made. Which is a super bummer, but Boom! was able to bring it back and this should be an amazing nine issue's. Read Full Review

I don't know what space The Dark Crystal occupies in most people's minds, Personally, I don't think there is enough of a dedicated fan base for this to hit a widespread nostalgic spot for readers. However, I do think that this series has the potential to be something interesting for anyone who likes fantasy. Read Full Review

Ultimately then, artistic niggles aside, this first issue provides an enjoyable reintroduction to the world of the Jim Henson classic, setting up an intriguing new status quo and giving fans of the original movie a whole new reason to be excited.  And hopefully, with the exposition now out of the way, the story can start to build some real momentum and deliver the sequel weve all been hoping for.
