All of these scenes infuse a sense of wonder and increase the humor, and you once again believe you can settle in and enjoy the vibe, but Mr. Beatty isn't done with you. At turns sexy and funny, Ruse suddenly rivets your attention with a dramatic intensity that comes in the disguise of yet another allusion to one of literature's fantastic figures. Theo is surprised to encounter Simon on this deserted island and how Simon and Emma will work out with Dave's Dodgers is anyone's guess. Simon learns from Theo that the people and their culture were probably eaten by the gargoyles of this island. This is one of those issues where one has to simply hope that the writer is going to explain the rather noticeable coincidences that his story hinges upon, as not only do Emma & Simon crash-land on an island that is the current location of the very villain Simon was looking for, but they also hook up with a band of mercenaries who look to be old friends of Simon. Now there is some fun to be found in this issue, as Emma's fight with the monkeys made me smile, and one does have to love any story that involves giant flying creatures, and ancient temples that play host of a tribe of savages. However, the interaction between Emma & Simon is once again largely ignored in this issue, and Scott Beatty's version of Emma is nearly as charming, as she is also too annoyed, and her responses lack the dry, sardonic wit that they previously held.
