At this point, I'm digging the story of Conan the Avenger. I have problems with its pacing, but I'm enjoying getting to know the land of Kush and Shumballa and the Cimmerian warrior without honor (honor is only to convince the weak that they are better than beasts). I'm not sure whose cup of tea this series is; I think if I weren't reviewing it, after the first arc it would not be mine. But for those who enjoy a good sword-and-sandal badass feast every month, this is surely the ticket. Read Full Review
In the end, Conan the Avenger is counterfeit Conan, unworthy of the legacy of sword-and-sorcery's greatest hero. The artwork is greatly improved from when this series started, but the story – while involving – has turned Conan into a passive figure. And that is the last thing Conan should ever be! I am not sure why this was rated so low -- maybe because there are only 2 critic reviews. But I would agree that the pacing doesn't pick up until #5, which makes all of this background reading worth it!
