This annuals best short story is the one written by Chuck Dixon hands down. While it has nothing to do with what is going on with Supergirl's main story by Peter David, it offers a horrifying glimpse into the hell of some random character being used by some evil planetary corporation mining for rare minerals on a hot planet.

The character as an adult speaks no words at all, we just see her being forced against her will to be strapped to a machine and transfer her mind to an autonomous android "tooljerk" on the hot planet to mine resources. The only context we get from her is memories from her childhood. How her father would retell childlike stories of Supergirl to put her to sleep.

The horror of this was that was all the memories the tragic character had left that gave her any happiness at all. So a malfunction happens where her consciousness leaves her mortal body completely and permanently attaches itself to the tooljerk which has a God Like form that can change into anything.

From the memories of Supergirl's tales, she transforms herself into Supergirl and destroys her corporate slaver's. While I simplify the message, the experience while short was very emotional and sad. As for the next short stories after this one, eh, nothing to write about. more
