The final chapter of this amazing epic begins here, with fantastic art by FRAZER IRVING (BATMAN AND ROBIN, XOMBI)! THE SHADE returns to his hometown, London, to get to the bottom of the mystery of who tried to kill him!
Aside from those first few pages, however, I found myself enjoying Irving's art in this issue. I think his artistic style really complimented the dark tones and premise of this issue. It wasn't nearly as light-hearted as some other issues before it (like the issue featuring Jill Thompson's art, or Darwyn Cooke). As a result I think it really added to the mood that Robinson was trying to convey. I also think Irving managed to depict The Shade's superpowers really well on panel towards the end of the issue. While at times these issues have quite a bit of dialog (which some people feel slows the story down - no complaints here BTW), this one has enough action, violence and intrigue to satisfy even the pickiest reader. "The Shade" has been a thoroughly enjoyable and high quality mini-series since its debut, and "The Shade" #9 continues that level of excellence. I'm looking forward to a collection of "The Shade" that can sit next to my "Starman Omnibus" volumes on my bookshelf (having it match would sure be nice, hint hint).
