In a world... where COBRA rules the planet! COBRA COMMANDER's forces have won, the entire planet Earth now submits to COBRA rule... but the burdens of ruling over billions of people make COBRA COMMANDER anxious to the good old days. And he decides there's just one group that can bring chaos back to this totalitarian order: G.I. JOE!
This isn't going to be an issue that works for people unfamiliar with the original source material or G.I. Joe's frequent appearances in online culture but it's a hysterically funny, painstakingly realized Elseworlds comic, with exactly the aesthetic that will make for a memorable issue years from now. If anything, it's at least more memorable than the equally weird, frighteningly fascinating Infestation crossover. Read Full Review
GI Joe Deviations is what happens when a solid creative team decides to have some fun and poke loving humor at a franchise. GI Joe Fans beware. If you have no sense of humor, you will probably not like this comic. If you are not a GI Joe fan, you may miss a few jokes here and there, but you will likely enjoy the overall 'Megamind' theme of the comic and it's gleeful, farcical tone. If you are a GI Joe fan, and you have a sense of humor, you will definitely want to buy at least 2 copies of this comic: one to keep, and one to read until the staples fall out. Read Full Review
I just can't believe that the Deviations book that I had the lowest expectations for turned out to be such a treat. This is one of the best single issues I've read in a few months without a doubt. If you have any affinity for G.I. Joe at all and only pick up one Deviations title, it should be this one. Read Full Review
Arguably the best issue to come out of the Deviations line, G.I. Joe: Deviations is a funny, self-aware and realistic look at a Cobra-ruled world that lives up to its billing as a love letter to the G.I. Joe franchise. A must buy for any Joe fan. Read Full Review
I found "G.I. JOE Deviations" to be super fun. The issue is unapologetically silly, and it rejects the moral underpinnings of the main "G.I. JOE" title. If that's not likely to strike you as funny or if you're not a fan of humorous one-shots, this might not be for you. However, if you find yourself smiling at the idea of a Cobra-run alternate reality that's as sly as it is doofy, don't miss this one. Read Full Review
The book comes full circle starting with the end of the feud between Cobra and the GI Joes, to showing how the advanced communications systems are making the world actually a great place to live in. Of course this is the problem, as Cobra Commander narrates how this wasn't his intended purpose for leading Cobra. Fans of the GI Joe property should get a kick out of this book, including a clear head nod with emphasis to a fan favorite villain. Once again IDW has impressed me with their Deviation titles, and I can't wait to read more! This book makes sense, dumb and goofy sense. Read Full Review
Ultimately, this comic is a love letter to all things GI JOE. All the references and easter eggs are sure to satisfy old school fans that grew up playing with the toys, watching the cartoons, and reading the comics. The playful nature of the plot and the cartoony art go hand in hand and the imaginative storyline is really funny. This book was an enjoyable read and takes a witty look at a scenario that fans have pondered over the years. Now we really know what would happen if Cobra wins. And knowing is half the battle! Lots of fun!
Fun but light on story and the art was terrible. I would NOT like to see this creative team return to GI Joe. It had a couple of neat moments but nothing memorable. Read Hama's ARAH GI Joe instead.
