Englert delivers stunning art throughout the issue. I love the visual style as well as the character designs. Read Full Review
Capes #1 is an interesting comic that at times feels like it could be a one-shot to pick up and enjoy. It has aspects that feel familiar and a riff on what has come before but also a story and world all its own. It's definitely nice to be able to dive into it after being hard to get all these years. It's a nice piece of the overall world of Invincible and for those that might have missed its original release, you now have a chance to pick up a copy. Read Full Review
The plot of the issue is simple: Bolt does some superhero stuff, we get introduced to Kid Thor and the other members of Capes Incorporated, and then a few more plot elements kick off before a kind of abrupt ending. Kirkman establishes the workplace/cop show feel of the book quickly, uses that to set up a few longterm plots, drops a mystery on readers, and takes it all home with a little more character development. Capes #1 is a fun read, but it's not going to change the way non-Marvel/DC superhero comics work. It's firmly in the tradition of non-Big Two superhero comics. It's not as raunchy or violent as some other examples, but it has just the right adult edge for those readers who want something a little more mature from their superheroes. Read Full Review
Capes #1 by Kirkman and Englert is an irreverent and raunchy superhero series that falls just a bit short of the satire greats like its Invincible backdrop or The Boys. With characters that try something outside, it is hard to be overly offensive to evoke comedy, and art that feels outdated for the year and genre, Capes #1 is a misstep in what could have been a major expansion on Robert Kirkmans Invincible universe.
