Two halves of the separated Matchstick clan face sinister odds in a desperate quest to reunite their family. While Kevin pursues his last hope of locating his wife and son, Magda and Hugo must fend off mystical challenges as they seek to escape their enemy's stronghold.
There's a sense of sadness that may come over fans as this issue is enjoyed. It means that there are two issues left before the finale of this, the last chapter of Kevin Matchstick. But there is also a sense of excitement too. Because to wrap up a narrative that has been going on since the 1980s, means that there can only be an ending of the sort that will echo throughout comic book history. The Hero Denied hits an intriguing part at the end that I hope isn't a fakeout of some kind and has real meaning behind it since it goes to some of the things that got a lot of people into this property decades ago. This issue is still working a two-track approach with its main story while the Gracklethorns get a little additional time and it works well since the stories are now all really starting to converge. Wagner's pacing may be problematic for some and part of me sometimes wishes I did wait to do this in collected form but I'm enjoying taking the smaller moments and really enjoying the time with it all. It's definitely got a sense of being about to pick up significantly and I'm excited for what's to come. Read Full Review
