Comic Book Resources - Doug Zawisza
May 19, 2011I was enthused to read the return of these characters as written by Jim McCann in the "Chaos War" special and more excited once I saw Phil Jimenez drawing the art for a cover or two. Reading this issue has given me reason to check the calendar so I can celebrate Canada Day. This issue is every bit worthy of comparisons to the "X-Men/Alpha Flight" story, except shorter and without Loki. It's good to have this team back. I hope they get to stick around for a long time. May 19, 2011Overall, this issue is an enjoyable one, and a great starting point for this new title, although why it couldn't have just been called #1 is beyond me. As far as weird gimmicky issue numbers go, 0.1 is even worse that #0, or the old-school #0.5 issues that Wizard used to publish as special giveaways back in the mid-to-late nineties. If you were thinking of giving the new Alpha Flight series a chance, this is of course the perfect place to jump in, it's extremely accessible, and is a fun read, despite my misgivings about its political content. Eye On Comics - Don MacPherson
May 19, 2011This property was at its most popular when it first turned up in Uncanny X-Men and when it spun off into its own title for the first time, written and illustrated by John Byrne. It's understandable that the creators behind this latest relaunch would want to capture the same sort of energy and dynamic that made Alpha Flight a success more than two decades ago. The problem is that restoring these characters to their prime, the writers spotlight one of the inherent problems with corporate super-hero comics: nothing changes, and thereby, nothing really matters. One of the things that stood out early on in Byrne's run was his and Marvel's willingness to make some real changes. Remember when Guardian, the most iconic in appearance of the entire team, was killed? It made it seem as though the stories mattered, that with these lower-tier Marvel heroes, creators needn't worry about the status quo. Now the status quo reigns supreme. Read Full Review

May 20, 2011"Danny: Overall, I dug this issue, but I am not Canadian, so I didn't really pick up on any overt sense of Canadian-ness, at least. At least, it doesn't feel as exaggerated as the first couple issues of that Great Ten miniseries before I gave up on it. I did, however, laugh a bit when they said "province."
