At first, you're carried along through Avengers vs. Invaders by the shear whimsy of the dialogue, the little things in the plot and the enjoyable distortions of well known heroes, but once you encounter the Torch's ponderings on his true nature and the Holocaust, the mood shifts, the heroism skyrockets and the idea that this book is just a really good ripping yarn fades. Where does this leave us? Was the initial "Ordnung Zeitgeist" a red herring or a coincidence? Is there actually a Cosmic Cube in play that captured the Invaders to our time or is Strange being deceived? Why did his initial attempt to locate it produce a vision of the Golden Age Vision, and why didn't he recognize the WWII-era mystery man (noting only that he "looks like the Vision" - the synthezoid version)? If Strange is as powerful as we've always believed, and as grandly portrayed as he is here, why isn't the world up to its dingus in puppies and kittens? What's up with the LMD's? Krueger writes with the subtly of a sledge hammer. Look at the third panel of the next-to-last page. It's ridiculous, unlikely, and unnecessary. But this book has the Avengers, the Invaders, and SHIELD; and if you love the Marvel Universe, you kind of have to buy it. It remains to be seen, however, if this series will be remembered fondly once it's over, or if we'll all want to sweep it under the rug as quickly as possible. Read Full Review
