Cary Nord's artwork is enjoyable superhero fare of the kind that he's good at. Using San Francisco as the battlescape gives Nord the chance to show off some nice city panoramas, effectively grounding the location and providing beautiful backdrops at the same time. Between his art and Carey's writing, "Secret Inasion: X-Men" is a decidedly different take on the events of the crossover, and a welcome chance to see some of the more sidelined X-Men take a prominent role. Now, before you accuse me of assigning a low score without too much malignity, I just can't justify a high rating for a book that doesn't do anything new, or even approach pertinence. Carey's script is entertaining and Nord's pencils are beautiful, so in that respect I applaud Marvel for handing the title over to capable hands, but at the same time, Secret Invasion: X-Men seems like nothing more than a routine action book without much consequence. Secret Invasion: X-Men #1 is dangerously close to falling into the “skip” category. The Nightcrawler elements make this one worth it for X-fans, but all other had best keep their expectations in check. Read Full Review
