The past few issues of Ultimate Spider-Man have been a great example of a writer taking an idea that he has been asked to incorporate for editorial reasons and turning it into something that not only feels as though it belongs in his book, but works better there than it does anywhere else. The issue ends with a predictable cliffhanger that promises to be resolved next month, and will hopefully settle the issue of Peter Parker's Ultimate fate. (Sorry, I couldn't resist that pun.) I, for one, hope this isn't the last we'll see of Peter Parker in the Ultimate Universe, as his struggle, not just as a super hero, but as a teenage boy trying to navigate the path between child and adulthood, has, thanks to Bendis, proved to be one of the most compelling stories in recent comic book history. Still, any Ultimate Spider-Man is better than no Ultimate Spider-Man, and while Mary Jane and Peter have barely had a chance to get their romance going, at least Ultimate Mephestio didn't get his hooks into the couple. Bendis is working with what he has been given, and he does a good job of it. While there have been much better Ultimate Spider-Man stories, there have also been a few bad Ultimate Spider-Man stories.
