The cover, with Jean beset by goblins, is an interesting way to go with her temptation by her omega mutant potential. Kirkman is playing on a lot of riffs here, and juggling a lot of characters. He seems to have traded the Rogue/Gambit/Iceman shenanigans for the Kurt/Peter morality conflict, and hes yet to bring Dazzler back into the mix with Angel. But, for most purposes, hes taken up exactly where Vaughan left off and continues to write a diverting team superhero book, if one without yet a singular stellar issue. Read Full Review

Ultimate X-Men is a title going nowhere and issue #71 is just impressive as the rest of Kirkman's run. Ultimate X-Men used to be a great read. It definitely has not been a good read since Kirkman took over the writing duties. I think that Marvel needs to seriously consider a creative team change in order to shake up Ultimate X-Men. I don't know how much longer I'm going to stick with this title. I definitely cannot recommend Ultimate X-Men to anyone at all. There are much better titles on the market that are worth your money. There was simply no point in another weak Phoenix appearance... It's just the same theme over and over again here. And why the hell did they place these goblins on the cover, when they were only in one frame of the comic? And what is it? What really is it? She's not mad, so it's not her vision or something, but why did Cyclops tell nothing? My god, that was really bad. And even if Jean IS the Phoenix, so what? We'll get another Phoenix rising and then another sudden defeat? I mean, it was the Phoenix arc, but there was almost no Phoenix and the other half of the issue is just X-Men vs fake Brotherhood.
