Shadowman appeals to a wide range of readers. If you like books like Animal Man, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the Walking Dead, you'll find a book you'll enjoy here. It's superheroes. It's fantasy. Its horror. The thing is, none of the genres is watered down by the others. It is a perfect blend of spandex, blood and magic. I rarely give books a 5 star rating. Shadowman is shaping up to be the strongest title yet in a relaunch full of home runs from Valiant. Each issue stands alone as a great chapter, but also advances a wider tale at the same time, and from the looks of things the story is only going to get darker and more intense. Valiant has approached their line of books with the simple idea that great writing combined great art will make a great comic book series. Seems like a pretty simple concept, and Shadowman is a shining example that it works. The high point of this series is still Zircher's stunning artwork. Few comic books look as good as Shadowman, and that's because Zircher is an incredible artist and storyteller. You never get confused with the action or lost in scene. It's smooth and gorgeous. And, man, there is so much blood. So much. It's practically dripping off the page. Having missed out on all of 90′s comics, this is my first exposure to the Valiant universe and while everything released has been awesome, I feel that Shadowman will stand head and shoulders above every other title once it gets a few more issues under it's belt. I know that I’ve brought up the first issue a lot, but really this issue is leaps and bounds better that it shocked me. I knew it was only a matter of time before this series picked up, but I didn’t expect it to knock it out of the park on the very next issue. With two issues now out on stands, "Shadowman" feels like it's another success for Valiant. When it was first announced, the Valiant revival felt like it could have easily been a false nostalgia for a defunct comic company. What we're getting instead is a series of strong revamps that take the core ideas for the titles and turn them into fun, modern comics. Jordan and Zircher have given us a winner with "Shadowman."
