There are a lot of artists looking for work now. Old artists, young aspiring artists. Artists with traditional styles. Artists with hyper stylized aesthetics. Throw a rock? Hit an artist.
Which is why allowing Sophie Campbell to do the art on Supergirl 1 is such a perplexing choice. Is this the BEST representation of Supergirl that we can see? Was Campbell the best possible artist to pair with Campbell? Would Campbell even think that? I do not.
Campbell's script shines. Supergirl as Linda Danvers (side stepping the Peter David run...which I get but is a choice...esp if you're going with the Danvers identity...esp considering that this is the BEST, come at me, run on the character) has a ton of responsibilities and does a nice job examining her role in the DCU with such a famous/successful cousin. We get a nice status quo with a fun mystery about Supergirl's identity (with some self gas lighting for Supergirl given her constant continuuity resets)...for a first issue, fun stuff.
The art though. It feels amateur...like an enthusiastic aping of Amanda Connor...but so much worse. Again, Art Editorial at DC (see Absolute Flash, several different art fill-ins on Action Comics, Absolute GL) have let the reader down. Asking what's BEST for the book (and Campbell should ask this too)...which artist out of the near INFINITE SEA OF ARTISTS would make this book more than the sum of its parts should be the clarion call of Art Choices on Comics. The mark was missed here by a Kryptonian Mile. more
