A very solid read with phenomenal art. I really enjoyed this as a first issue, as it establishes character and setting in an efficient and entertaining manner. The world building that goes into this series is astonishing, as it is truly a unique sci-fi take on the GL franchise. I absolutely want to learn more about Jo, and her use of the lantern ring is practical and interesting. The real strength of this book is the art, however. Campbell absolutely kills it in every way. His character work has always been strong, but his city/urban design is nothing short of breathtaking. His panel layout, pacing, and overall design is nothing short of breathtaking. I honestly have not been this enthralled by a single artists' work for many years: maybe Opena or even Finch before him have been the last artists to have broken through in the industry who I buy regardless of what book they are on (in addition to the greats like Lee, McFarlane, Capullo, Bachalo, and others). In short, I am eagerly anticipating issue 2, and would love to see Jo cross over to the main DCU when all is said and done. |
