Superman: Red & Blue (2021) #1

Sep 14, 2021

Beautiful first issue collecting some great stories that get to the heart of Superman. I'll admit I wasn't a fan of the first issue, it just didn't put Superman in a situation that I would want him to be in. I'm okay with such a scenario but I don't want it for Superman and I was surprised that it was the story to start Red and Blue. After that however there are a couple of really great stories, one that is tragic and hard-hitting but also has a real sense of hope and shows the impact Superman can have even when he isn't involved or directly saving someone through physical actions. It's a very touching story. The other standout story for me was a more imaginative one dealing with a world without color and Superman being the one to return color to the Earth, knowing that there are pros and cons to colors and the emotions associated with them in our world. Lastly there is a cute story where we see the morals instilled in Clark by Ma and Pa Kent. Overall this was an excellent first issue of Red and Blue that showed great promise for the issues that would follow.

Superman: Red & Blue (2021) #2

This issue while solid overall was definitely a drastic dropoff in quality from the brilliant first issue. That isn't to say that there aren't one or two good stories here, but several of them didn't make sense for such an anthology type book and didn't really have any kind of message. The two strong stories for me the one in which Ma Kent explains to two women the ways in which Clark is very much her son, regardless of if they are connected by blood, and the story in which a schoolgirl is bullied and called a liar for telling a story where she helped Superman. It's a very cute story that teaches a timeless lesson while also once again showing the heart and kindness of Superman. Not a very strong issue but still a solid one with a couple of short stories worth checking out.

Superman: Red & Blue (2021) #3

This was a return to form after the disappointing second issue. There are some great short stories this time around ranging from Superman's impact on everyday people, to the ways that Superman is seen through the eyes of Batman and Wonder Woman, to the quirky space-faring adventures Superman can find himself on while still being able to find ways to spread kindness to others. Much like some of the other good Red and Blue stories we've had, there are one or two strong stories here where we see the impact Superman can have on everyday people and the ways that he can rub off on others. It's always heartwarming to see Superman at his purest like this while also showing that he can still find the time to interact with the everyday person and deal with everyday situations. Superman may be a grand and powerful hero but he is still so strongly connected with humanity. The aforementioned story involving Batman and Wonder Woman is a definite highlight capturing just what makes Clark Kent Superman while showing the ways that while Batman and Wonder Woman see different sides and aspects of Superman, those two halves combine to make him as great and as wonderful as he truly is. Fantastic issue that often manages to deliver on the promise of the concept of this series.
