Archie vs. Predator II #1

Jul 24, 2019

Archie vs Predator 2 #1 is an interesting continuation of the first go-around but too many references to what happened without enough explanation hamper the enjoyment for new readers. Still, the ending of the first issue indicates that may not be as much of a problem in future issues, it's just a question if you can get through this first one.

Dark Red #1

Mar 20, 2019

There's a lot of potential here and I want to read more and see where it goes. The comic could be amazing diving into the current zeitgeist and exploring a snapshot of the current American socio-political situation. As is, we just have a vampire story set in a place we don't normally see in comics.

James Bond (2019) #1

Dec 4, 2019

As a heist story, James Bond #1 is a solid start. As a Bond story, it's a bit mixed. The issue is a lot of buildup to whatever villain awaits. It's just a bit different in how we get there. The threat too feels a bit scaled back for a character who in the past has stopped global threats, another interesting change. There's more to come and the debut is interesting enough to check the rest out. It just might be a disappointment for those expecting the typical Bond over the top action and threats.

A Man Among Ye #1

Jun 17, 2020

The issue is a good one blending fact and fiction and taking us to a world we don't see too often in comics. A Man Among Ye #1 is a fun debut that feels like it's having fun with historical individuals we don't know much about but who probably had many lifetimes of stories to tell.

Devil's Reign (2021): Omega

May 25, 2022

Like Devil's Reign itself, this "Omega issue does a fantastic job of just being entertaining while also being a sly reflection of our reality. At the core throughout the issue is a new elected official being left a mess of an office that he has to fix after it was run by a corrupt individual. Sound familiar? But, beyond that clear parallel, the comic is just entertaining and sets things up nicely for what's to come. If you're interested it's well checking out and a nice coda to the event series.

Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red (2020) #4

Jul 17, 2020

Harley Quinn Black + White + Red Chapter Four is a crazy chapter that just works. It's a goofy concept that is one you can pick up and just enjoy. There's a cuteness and humor to it all, especially seeing the embarrassment that Ivy feels being a part of it all. The team really delivers both in the lyrics, and some subtle jokes, as well as art that delivers the "battle" aspect of the rap. Another excellent chapter showing off how much you can do with Harley Quinn and also when you let your creators have fun.

Invincible Iron Man (2022) #1

Dec 14, 2022

Invincible Iron Man #1 is a great start that does an excellent job of balancing what has been going on with what's to come. It should continue to hook and excite long time readers while acting as a perfecting starting point for new ones as well.

Static (2021): Season One #1

Jun 15, 2021

The comic is fantastic. There is some choppiness at times with some jumps in scenes and some disbelief as to who knows about the events of Milestone Returns #0 but it's a hell of a fun start. Ayala delivers a balance of action of the grounded issues of growing up. It delivers a start in a classic style of superhero stories with a look that's full of energy. Static: Season One #1 is a hell of a start that's well worth checking out and the start of something exciting.

Star Trek: Discovery - Adventures In the 32nd Century #3

May 29, 2022

Overall, Star Trek: Discovery Adventures in the 32nd Century #3 is a fun deep dive into Detmer. The story by Johnson and Beyer is pleasant. The art by the creative team is spectacular. Altogether, a story that gives a different look into this secondary character.

Monstress #1

Nov 4, 2015

Liu in one issue has put together what feels like a thought out world with a history that goes back decades. Battles are referenced, events mentioned, it all feels like its been thought out and meticulously put together. Add on top of that women (well character really) of all types, shapes, sizes, skin color, and you have what is a diverse, in many ways, debut. All of that together creates one of the best debuts, and comics, of the year.
