Afterlife With Archie #7

Dec 13, 2014

In the end it has to be said, if you're not readingyou're missing out on what is perhaps the best book being published right now and if you're on the fence about it this week, have no fear, issue #7 is a great introduction that exemplifies the strong character driven story that is at play here.

B.P.R.D.: Hell On Earth #123

Sep 24, 2014

In the end, B.P.R.D. #123 is a spectacular fight issue that shows an inkling of what's to come while also being a reasonably good introduction to the series. But eternal foreshadowing isn't really enough to recommend this issue and if an introductory issue is truly needed it could be better than this.

B.P.R.D.: Hell On Earth #124

Oct 17, 2014

This undercurrent of creepiness and it's one-shot nature makes B.P.R.D. #124 an excellent and exciting issue. It's both a great introduction and stepping stone for new and returning readers and it manages to carry forward ideas and character development points that have been seeded a while ago. Given its one-shot nature, this issue is easy to recommend.

B.P.R.D.: Hell On Earth #125

Dec 21, 2014

While it's not the most impressive beginning to a story arc, it's a reasonably strong start that doesn't lay too many cards on the table, even if it repeats the ongoing themes a little too much. The foreshadowing here is also not too vague and it seems like it will actually go somewhere which is a definite bonus especially in regards to earlier issues' problems with over-foreshadowing. This issue should be a definite buy for those who enjoy B.P.R.D.

B.P.R.D.: Hell On Earth #126

Dec 21, 2014

B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #126 is great continuation from the previous issue and a great scene-setter for issues to come. It perfectly captures the ambience of the B.P.R.D. universe while also being an exciting (and sometimes heartbreaking) story about the end of the world.

B.P.R.D.: Hell On Earth #127

Jan 25, 2015

It's a thing however " B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #127 is a great issue though it's firmly for those who've been reading the series for a while now.

B.P.R.D.: Hell On Earth #128

Feb 22, 2015

It's worth singing James Harren's praise again here, as he draws worn down soldiers as well as he draws monsters and demons. It's a wonder to read through this issue at times, as feelings are conveyed through characters faces, poses and as well as through the wonderful application of colour by Dave Stewart. It's this blend of creepiness and despair, that's strengthened by the contrast with somewhat optimistic moments that make B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #128 a stand out issue.

B.P.R.D.: Hell On Earth #129

Mar 20, 2015

Elsewhere, the buildup that's occurred over the course of the past five issues doesn't have nearly enough payoff and while it's possible to see the nature of the threats that Gall Dennar faces in the distant past, tying into the monsters that Agent Howards and the B.P.R.D. have to fight in the present day, it remains to be seen when that will occur. The lack of payoff for this particular storyline as well as the hints of what the Black Flame is and what he might do, are B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #129's biggest issues. Laying the bedrock for stories to come is important but it's far more interesting to read in a collected edition than month to month. And as good as this issue is, it's not so good as to escape that fact.

Convergence: Batman: Shadow of the Bat #2

May 25, 2015

However there's no real reason to read Convergence: Batman: Shadow of the Bat #2 unless it's for purely masochistic reasons. It's an impressively dull issue that barely continues on from the first in a logical fashion and stands out as being a particularly pointless part of the Convergence event.

Convergence: Wonder Woman #1

Apr 23, 2015

Convergence: Wonder Woman #1 is in fact, the perfect setup; providing just the right amount of character development to set the stage for what comes later in the issue, while also building up to a bigger conflict in the second issue. Throughout, a vein of creepiness is mined to just the right degree, and it's exciting to see what will happen next month.

Rumble #1

Dec 20, 2014

In perhaps the single best debut of the year, Rumble's creative team have done a wonderful job of introducing the world and characters and setting up the central mystery of who (or what) that shadowy figure on the cover is, and what he wants. Around him they've arrayed an eclectic cast of characters who promise to every bit as interesting as the deranged world which they inhabit. Rumble promises to be a wonderful journey and this first issue has handily delivered on that promise.

Supreme: Blue Rose #4

Oct 18, 2014

Supreme: Blue Rose #4 is a good book that could be better. It remains to be seen if it will get better, but for now it's something to keep an eye on.

Supreme: Blue Rose #5

Dec 13, 2014

It's by no means the end of the story but that end can't come fast enough. When it does it will hopefully be more than the sum of its parts, as with this latest issue, Supreme is simply not as engaging or as interesting as it once was.

Supreme: Blue Rose #6

Jan 18, 2015

In it's final moments, Supreme: Blue Rose rises back up to the level of quality that it's first few issues promised, whether the finale will be as good remains to be seen but the mystery and promise is stronger than ever and the end promises to be anything but dull.

Supreme: Blue Rose #7

Mar 9, 2015

It's actually a surprisingly poignant ending but one that's as abrupt as the issue that lead up to it. It's also firmly rooted in setting up the possibility of future stories, potentially following a more "traditional" superhero story. It's an appropriate ending to a mini-series as focused on story and transformation as Supreme: Blue Rose, so while this final issue has its weaknesses it finishes strong.

The Sandman Overture #4

Dec 20, 2014

The Sandman: Overture #4 is a good comic that's hampered by its place in the middle of a story that feels like it should have already ended. No fault on the part of the writer or artist, but this is an issue " as good as it is " that will probably read much better in trade-paperback, where the call-backs and call-forwards are will have much more strength. Until then, this remains a fine issue, but here's hoping the next one comes out sooner, rather than later.
