Swamp Thing (2011) #8 |
Apr 7, 2012 |
I really can't get enough of this book. The battle that ensues is gorgeous and graphic and even has a slight twist, but I feel that over all, as a monthly 20 page title, that the story telling is a bit too decompressed. I don't dislike the pace of the story but on a month to month basis it seems a bit too quick. Decompressed story telling is a common practice in most manga which is why it works really well in volumes that are around two hundred pages. What I wouldn't give for even a 10 dollar 100 page monthly color Swamp Thing comic that maintains the current quality. But I digress. Pick up this issue and experience the most action packed installment yet with gorgeous visuals and solid story telling. Art and story that seems to go by too fast but a great package none the less. |

Venom (2011) #15 |
Apr 7, 2012 |
This issue changes artists again which, as always, annoys me but at least it isn't a terrible artist. The issues story is a great setup. Flash's professional life is much better off but his personal life is in shambles. He struggles for control over the symbiote and a new threat lurks around the corner, yet Flash still has some old threats to get rid of. This issue doesn't do a whole lot to push things forward but it does read as a good jumping on point for people who haven't been reading. This book has been consistently enjoyable month to month and I think this issue sets just enough pieces into place for some more enjoyment next month. What do you guys think? Will this impending class between Venom and inevitable new adversary be worth sticking around for? |

Venom (2011) #14 |
Mar 9, 2012 |
The story ties up nicely with a epic battle between Ghost Rider/Venom/Hulk and Blackheart. Blackheart is defeated in a clever manner using his own devices and all seems right with the world. A reminder of the Deal with the Devil that these 4 characters made is thrown in, and I wish I could just forget about it. The deal with the Devil portion of the story really killed it for me and being reminded of it in this otherwise fantastic finale seems wrong. When all is said and done though, Circle of Four ended up being a fun romp through Hell with a fresh team up of Marvel Universe characters. I think the weekly shipping factor is what made guest writers and artists a necessity, but I think the story would have been much more successful if done solely by Remender and Moore on a monthly basis. I'll see you here next month as we kick off another story with Venom. A Venom that is no longer on the run from the government. |

All in all, we are 6 issues in to a fantastic horror comic that continues to delight. If you have liked what you've read so far, don't stop now. And if you have been reading but aren't quite sold, pick this one up as things get a bit more interesting. |
