Marco Rudy’s art is the uppercut knock-out shot of the entire exercise. First, let me talk about layout. Not since Batwoman have I seen layouts this spectacular. Each page contains a really special statement to what comic books could and should look like. Epic double page spreads, panels that begin one place and end inside a second panel. Moving panel edges, combinations of various scenes, its all so gorgeous that it lifts Snyder’s story into something else. Rudy also has a keen sense of macabre and that which is really unnerving. DC has ensured that the first Wednesday of the month is always a treat for me, with the one-two punch of Swamp Thing and Animal Man ensuring quality reading. I felt a little premature heaping hyperbole on Swamp Thing in its first couple of issues, but weve now accumulated nearly a trades worth of material I believe next months Swamp Thing #7 will be the last chapter of the first collected edition so I can now say with confidence that Snyder and his artistic collaborators are giving us the best Swamp Thing story since the Moore era, and a tale that can stand respectably alongside Moores masterpiece. This isn't a Swamp Thing story that we've had before. Scott Snyder continues crafting the story of Alec Holland trying to avoid his destiny while the Rot threatens the existence of the Green as well as the rest of the world. The story is building and you never know what you're going to get. There is a crossover coming up and there is a feeling that we should be seeing appearances by other heroes as the threat gets bigger and bigger, despite the nice self-contained feel to the story. There is a lot happening to move the story forward but there is also a feeling that we don't have a lot of action. What happens at the end should more than make up for it as Snyder sprinkles an extra dose of crazy into the cliffhanger ending. SWAMP THING continues to be in a class by itself month after month. By the time we get to the end of the issue, you can see where the thrust of the series will be heading from here. We've got both old and new adversaries to worry about from this point on, and of course one more issue to finish off this current story.
