The fantastic storybook adventure begins! The new creator-owned series from Jeremy Dale (
This early in the series, Dale is still finding his way as a storyteller and is working out a few kinks. Still, it is clear that Skyward is heading in the right direction. Read Full Review
In the end, I do love a good concept and Skyward delivers a great world to explore. My biggest issue is that we don't really get a major conflict right away. The book does hint a something major developing towards the end but, once again, the first issue is pretty short. We won't get to see how our characters react to this until the next issue. However, since I'm hooked it's not much of a problem. Read Full Review
Skyward #1 is an introduction to a new series, dropping little hints here and there. Do not go into this issue expecting major character development. The focus here is on relationships, especially the one between a father and his son. The story gives off a true adventure feel and the mystery of the sword will definitely be the major focus of this adventure. Lets see if anything original can come of it. Read Full Review
If you like fantasy adventure then this story is definitely for you. Quinn has a long way to go before he's an interesting character, but I have the feeling that once he's mixed with our FCBD characters he'll get there sooner rather than later. Now, I had an advanced look at this issue which is not out yet. If you're interested then I encourage you to download the FCBD edition (here) and then be sure to pre-order the book. Action Lab has announced a price drop meaning all of their titles are going to be at the competitive price of $2.99, but what helps keep the price there is the pre-orders. The more they know to print the better the price (there are other factors as well of course). This first issue is $3.99 to begin with, but after that it drops to $2.99, so do not miss out on what has started off as an entertaining fantasy story about a boy and his dog. Read Full Review
This is not to say that the story is bad, I look forward to seeing where Dale goes with the story in subsequent issues. That's where he'll have the chance to distinguish himself. From this opening things could really go anywhere, and I'm definitely interested in reading more to find out. Read Full Review
All in all, "Skyward" #1 is a nice, entertaining introduction to the comic by Dale. I feel like we've got a good grasp of what its world and characters are like, and with the plot kicking into high gear in the last few pages, there's enough of a hook to come back for issue #2 as things get rolling.
