Pick up this issue. If you're new to the series, pick up 12 and 13 while you're at it, otherwise this could be tricky to understand. For long term readers, this issue is going to blow you away. The writers have put together a story filled with such a tense ambience you don’t fully realise it until you exhale after reading it. At that moment you come to recognize just how enthralled you were in the tale of these characters as they make their way through this forlorn adventure. New readers can definitely pick up this issue and grasp the tone and direction of the story but I highly recommend starting at issue 12 to fully appreciate the setting and feel being created here. Abe Sapien #14 is an easy comic book to review because it's that rare franchise which carries instant quality. I read a ton of Dark Horse titles each month and really each week, but for my money Abe Sapien really is one of the best they publish. It rises above their licensed material which I rate very high (especially compared to other publishers), it rises above their foray into the superhero genre (for the most part) and it sits at the top of the Mignolaverse in my opinion. The last issue may have been labeled as a "starting point", but trust me" you can start this journey any time and it's always going to be one worth taking. Read Full Review

Overall, this was just another terrific installment by an astonishingly consistent and always-evolving creative team. Fans of the Mignolaverse in general should be really excited for the current state of Abe Sapien given the greater glimpses of this characters past we have recently been treated to. While Abe Sapien continues to be an interesting comic about one of my favorite B.P.R.D. characters, the story seems to be spinning its wheels right now. The art, the mystery laced into the plot, the world building (or rebuilding, if you will) along with the character make this enjoyable to read, but there's very little sense of propulsion driven by the plot and characters and no sense of change. There is always the possibility that the changes that should have occurred in this issue will play out in the next, which is always the problem with reviewing single issues, but I can only judge this comic based on its own merit and how it compares to the issues that came before it, and while I enjoyed it, I also feel like it could have been stronger.
