A mad playwright puts on a Grand Guignol featuring actors that are real vampires. The evil financer of the play makes a bizarre discovery when he finds out that the playwright is a fraud and the true author is a disembodied head of a famous American author kept in a glass case.
He is the standard for a tale such as this and his work enhances every panel on every page. In a world where capes and cowls dominate the market, this type of story could be lost on some people. I wish I could elaborate more on details of the story, but doing so would reveal too much about the plot. All I can say is that the artwork is dark and brooding, the story presents a tale elegant and morbid, and the overall comic exceeds expectations. The Lord Baltimore comics, to the point, have all been excellent reads. “The Play” continues that tradition and cements Mignola as the preeminent horror comic author.
