Due to Brian Wood's ability to write a strong character driven story one might argue Conan has never been this fleshed out before. While other authors have developed the incredible world, Wood sticks to the character and his internal psychosis. It's different for Conan, but because it's so different it's worth reading. Conan the Barbarian #16 is a great comic by Brian Wood and David Gianfelice. Their prior experience working together is evident, as they both bring their A-game here, making for perhaps the strongest opener to any Conan arc this series has yet had, which is saying quite a lot considering the talents we've seen before. While not groundbreaking these stories have been giving me something that I don’t often get in comics-- a pure adventure story that feels like kids could have been reading it a century ago on a porch while their fathers were out hunting, just as easily as by a young guy today waiting for a bus in L.A-- this comic is worth a read. This is perhaps my favourite interpretation of Conan; writer Brian Wood's young Cimmerian is more sympathetic and vulnerable, while tough as old boots. This month, Conan and Blit embark on a 'vision quest' after partaking in Yellow Lotus, a psychotropic of the enlightened, as "true pleasure can only be found in the mind", which results in our hero facing many of his demons. The Nightmare in the Shallows will last three issues, which puts us at issue #19 when it is over. That leaves five more issues for Brian Wood's run on Queen of the Black Coast. I don't expect much for the remainder of this story arc, but I hope he brings in someone good for the big finish. Read Full Review
