Overall, this is a triumphant ending to the series. It surpasses its predecessors in every form of storytelling and holds its own with respect to the amplitude of its action. Fans of the series will almost certainly love this issue, but, in the biggest surprise of all, newcomers may actually enjoy this book as well in light of its high quality and self-contained nature. The art is not classically what you'd call good, but I love it to death. The pencils are rough and thick, and the inks unsubtle, which combine to give it a somewhat likable look that appears deceptively simple. For this final issue, Giffen and Koblish show the O.M.A.C. rampaging Hulk-like through Checkmate, tearing the organization down as it tries to get to Maxwell Lord. Using all of Kirby's techniques from emotive figures to thunderous sound effects to the ever classic but effective Kirby crackle, Giffen and team serve up a tour-de-force of Marvel action. This series was fun in its attempts to expand the DC Universe beyond the standard issue capes and tights. It is that very attempt to get outside the Mother Box -- even though DiDio and Giffen did so in a manner that reverentially updated beloved concepts and characters from yesteryear -- that fought against this series. O.M.A.C. as a concept is one that was only ever marginally appreciated, but to make it something completely different from any recognizable predecessor undermined any true chance of success, especially when set against fifty-one other comics from DC and a multitude of new books from across the comics landscape. From start to finish, however, this comic maintained an air of fun, adventure and absolute uncertainty. It's just a shame that it had to quickly wrap up as the series was truly hitting its stride.
