With Cassandra Cain still stuck in the Spirit World, Xanthe and Constantine are hoping the one portal they've found (which is quickly closing) is their one-way ticket to the land of the dead to help rescue Batgirl! Cass has made two spirit friends along the way who have given her a special cloak that helps mask her living-flesh stench to keep the other spirits from eating her...but can they be trusted? And hey, what's in this tea that they just gave her...?!
Two issues in, this series has the potential to be one of the best new series DC has put out in a very long time, and that's due to how deftly it weaves together plots that honestly, have no business working together! Read Full Review
Chock-full of intriguing action and meaningful plot progression, Haining and Sebastian Cheng's gorgeous art pairs perfectly with the familial drama and supernatural excitement Wong brings toSpirit World#2, making the issue a must-read for any fan of DCs new hero Xanthe Zhou, or the beloved icons John Constantine and Cassandra Cain. Overall, this is the ‘We are Legends' story that I think has the strongest legs, and this second issue really makes the case for Xanthe to be a key part of the DC Universe for years to come. The pairing with Constantine and Cassandra is inspired, and shows that the character is already a versatile and unique character in the DC Universe. Read Full Review
Spirit World #2 mixes humor and horror, giving us some great action scenes with Cassandra and Po Po along with lots of dazzling magic from Xanthe. For anyone who loves Asian mythology and wants to see a different twist on magic use in the DC Universe, check this out! Read Full Review
Much like the first chapter, Spirit World #2 is as much an exploration of The Envoy as a character as it is an adventure book, but it also works on that level. Read Full Review
We're only two issues in, but so far there is a lot to like and latch onto as a reader. Read Full Review
Overall, Spirit World is entertaining, but has a few distracting flaws. While I appreciate the nuance in working topics of gender identity into the complex lore, some of the choices come off way too convenient or heavy handed. While the mystery of Xanthe's identity can be relatable, it is not nearly as compelling as it could be. To be honest, most of the conflict in the issue is an awkward family dinner and a tangential mission. I believe we haven't seen the best of what awaits Spirit World, and sincerely hope it continues it's exciting art style and mysterious tone. Read Full Review
Spirit World #2 is not as good as the first issue, but I hope that what Alyssa Wong sets up this month will pay off. I still recommend everyone checks this out; I hope I don't look like a fool for doing so when all is said and done. Read Full Review
This isnt a bad issue per say, but cracks start to show. Alyssa Wong start to get preachy, yet there are some great moments. If she can reign herself in from her worst tendencies this will easily bounce back.
Also stop using the terrible trope of making an established character worse to rise up a new character. Xanthe is good enough to stand up on their own... just let them do that. Dont make Constantine look worse to make them look better. Please stop doing this.
Does get some good feels though for a couple of short parts.
