Welcome to Altered States... Dynamite Entertainment's parallel reality in the vein of DC's Elseworlds and Marvel's What If! Ella Normandy is one of three space explorers sent on an expedition to Venus-But on the way to their destination, the interplanetary ship is sucked into a mysterious space-time portal and ends up crash-landing on the alien planet Drakulon, where the rivers run with blood. There she climbs from the wreckage to find herself the only human on a planet filled with vampires-and no way to get back home!
Although the concept risks being too much of a parody of itself, it still works with the fresh approach to the story. One of the better examples is the use of the name Ella, as she does become Vampirella in a sense, just perhaps not in the way that the readers might have expected. More so, the success of this series is the injection of new inspirations into an old character. Those inspirations themselves might be borrowed from other genres as well, but the formula works well here, and despite being a one-shot, this will likely leave fans wanting more. Read Full Review

I really liked the central conceit for this book, but it also suffers from not being able to spend much time elaborating on it. It's drawn well and provides some nods for genre fans, but honestly, I would wait and pick up the eventual trade of all of the Altered States books, or whatever collection this issue gets reprinted in if you want to check it out. I think the story would have benefitted from either being a longer one-shot or a mini-series. There is so much establishing and forced exposition to cram as much information about the world as possible that by the time we know what we need to know we get one very brief action scene and the story is over. It seemed a little ambitious to take the story, turn it upside down and cram it into 22 pages. The writing and pacing would probably have benefitted from having more time to 'show' so they wouldn't have to spend so much time 'telling'. With the story and the pacing I can't say I can even recommend this to Vampirella fans but on the other hand it's not like it's poorly written or drawn so it gets a 2 for effort but ultimately fails to be compelling enough to read.
