One of the "problems" with reviewing Invincible is that I'm such a big fan of the series that I feel readers should start at the beginning, or at the very least, start from the beginning of an arc, so it's hard to recommend starting here. While new readers would be able to understand and enjoy what is going on, you're going to be missing out on so much great backstory that you would be doing yourself a terrible disservice by jumping to this point. Go get started and just know that when you get to Issue 49, or Trade Paperback 10, or Ultimate Collection, Volume 5, you'll have yourself a great story that sets up something big in Issue 50. It would be easy to just tread water in the run-up to the anniversary issue, but Kirkman and his team resist that temptation. While there are many ongoing plots bubbling away, and this issue isn't particularly self-contained (although in all honesty, I don't think anyone would have too much trouble following what's going on), it's anything but filler. Aside from all that, this issue is a thrilling read in its own right, and a great example of superheroes done absolutely, perfectly, right. Marvel and DC take note. Read Full Review
