Keatinge also moves the plot forward more than some introductory issues do: weve already been introduced to a mysterious villain, Mr. Crowe, who is building a mecha army, and Zachs Geldarian girlfriend is already in danger off on Mercury. The plot is simple and it builds off of a lot of well-established tropes, the villain with the super army and the damsel in distress, but its appealing and well-paced.Randolphs art in this issue is really great. Its consistent with the art in the Invincible universe, but Randolph makes Tech Jacket his own, combining the Invincible style with the sort of style you might see in a mech manga or anime show. The colorist, David McCaig, does an absolutely phenomenal job. The colors are rich and vibrant, and they do a great job of establishing the setting by using warm, orange tones for scenes on earth and brilliant blues and greens for the space scenes. Tech Jacket might seem like just another book about power suits, fighting aliens, and being awesome, but under the surface this story has a lot more going on. It puts the characters and their relationships to each other before fight scenes, it prioritizes story building. This creative team gives us a book that is fun, exciting, and engaging. Tech Jacket has a solid foundation of ideas. A robotech-type armored suit that is part of the main characters body and he fight space crime. With practiced pacing, we get the touchstones of the character. Father that serves as support, girlfriend in trouble, evil doers scheming, and bad thing to serve as the cliffhanger to carry into issue two. I enjoyed the book. It set up the next few issues and delivered the exposition artfully without boring me to death. The visuals were great with unique camera angles, character designs that didnt seem overly silly, and the last pages use of negative space is fantastic. Read Full Review

With so much happening in the background, it looks like the robot vs alien action is about to heat up as our protagonist might have to face an enemy with armour much like his own. Will Zach carve his own niche in this genre? will Tech Jacket survive its new run at Image Comics? Only time will tell, but from this issue it is clear to see that there is potential in this title. When this high-flying issue was complete I was equal parts enthused and frustrated. The extreme lack of detail when it came to characters and backstory didnt allow the shocking revelation to actually shock. That said, Tech Jacket #1 does provide enough incentive to check back because of the promise shown in the science-fiction elements of the book and the classic entertainment value found in the Peter Parker-ian hero. Its not the most impressive debut of the week but its good enough to warrant checking it out to see if the series is something youre interested in. Read Full Review

I didn't really get a feel for the main character in this issue. Various people are put into peril in this issue and for that to be effective, I really need to care about them. I've read plenty of comics that can introduce a world and cast of characters in a 1st issue and make me care about them. That did NOT happen in this particular 1st issue. It wasn't bad, it was just average. I don't care if Tech Jacket gets out of the jam he put himself into. Tech Jacket isnt a bad book; its just not very good. I dont have the time, money or inclination to tear through X number of Invincible comics and/or buy another 3-issue mini just to understand fully whats happening in one issue of a new series. If youre an Invincible fan, go for it. If not, then I wouldnt bother. Its a thoroughly whelming story with good art and colors but is ultimately forgettable. Read Full Review
