You Don't Read Comics - Russ Bickerstaff

    Oct 28, 2026

Skybound’s Universal Monsters series has had a relatively high standard of quality. And as good as some of it has been in a recent memory, none of the previous series have quite managed the level of achievement that Thompson and De Iulis have managed with The Bride of Frankenstein Lives. It respects the original film while expanding on it in a way that feels both faithful to the original franchise and deeply engaging for modern readers. Read Full Review

Bride of Frankenstein Lives is one of the best debuts of the year. Unsurprisingly, Thompson and de Iulis knock it out of the park with a beautifully executed gothic tale that pairs emotional weight with stunning artwork. Read Full Review

Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives #1 is a stunning debut that gives the iconic monster a compelling voice of her own. Kelly Thompson captures the terror of experiencing a cruel world for the first time, making The Bride's vulnerability and growing defiance deeply affecting. Mattia De Iulis delivers breathtaking artwork that makes every moment feel immediate, with gorgeous splash pages and remarkably lifelike expressions. The result is a haunting, emotionally rich horror comic that honors the character's origins while giving her story a powerful new direction. Read Full Review

Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives #1 is a haunting and beautiful start to this new take on a classic monster. Kelly Thompson gives the bride a compelling journey of survival and self-discovery, balancing sympathy for her with the horror of the world around her. Mattia De Iulis brings that world to life with gorgeous gothic artwork and a dark color palette. Together, the creative team delivers an opening issue that makes you feel for the supposed monster and fear the people she encounters. If you enjoy classic horror with an emotional core, this is one to add to your pull list. I’m looking forward to seeing where the bride’s journey takes her next. Read Full Review

    Comic Crusaders - Al Mega

    Oct 26, 2026

Universal Monsters: The Bride of Frankenstein Lives #1 understands the assignment. It takes one of horror’s most recognizable images and gives her interiority, agency and anger without sanding away the monster. Thompson and De Iulis are not trying to “fix” the Bride. They are finally letting her speak for herself. Fam, if the rest of this four-issue run keeps this level of control, this could end up being one of the strongest Universal Monsters books Skybound has put out. Read Full Review
