Universal Monsters: Phantom of the Opera #1 is an awesome first issue that really captures the essence of this timeless story, well adding some more horror to it. The story is familiar but just enough different to set up some interesting things as the series goes on. The artwork doesn’t miss and really brings this world to life. This is a must get at the shops this week and should be on the top of the additions to your Pull List. This book is my Pick of the Week and I’m sure it will be yours as well. Read Full Review

Its fun. The supernatural elements of the story feel particularly impressive in a stylish rendering that finds a rich and textured home on the comic book page. Its really, really difficult to make a story like Phantom live between two covers in comic book format. It HAS been tried on occasion in the past in various ways. Boss and Simmonds do a remarkable job of giving it all precisely the amount of life that its going to need to saunter and glide its way through the remaining three issues in the series. Universal Monsters: The Phantom of the Opera #1 earns a spot in your pull list if Universal Monsters’ bloody twists hook you, blending familiar haunts with fresh inspector grit that promises throat-shredding escalation. Casual browsers might find the setup echoes too loudly amid the promising gore, but dedicated horror hounds get solid value in Simmonds’ visuals and Boss’s taut kills. Read Full Review

    Comic Watch - Lillian Hochwender

    Feb 25, 2026

The Phantom of the Opera #1 offers a bold and haunting new interpretation of a legendary Gothic figure. Simmonds’ artwork is gorgeously grim, but perplexing adaptational choices and a one-note approach to horror keep the comic from being pitch-perfect. Read Full Review

Universal Monsters issue #1 strikes hard parallels between uninteresting dialogue and storytelling and breathtaking art. In the opinion of the reviewer, this is some of the best work from Martin Simmonds. Read Full Review
