Dog Tag is a fictional story about a very real war. It follows the life and thoughts of Corporal Tom Fuller through the final year of World War II as his service takes him from the invasion of Normandy to the surrender of Japan. Borrowed from real world stories and little known events of the war, Dog Tag asks big questions about the war while focusing on the heroism of the ordinary people who lived and died during the conflict.

Nerd Initiative - Matthew Roth
May 06, 2026Dog Tag #1 is a powerful tale of the realities of war. There is a romantic view of something that is ugly and primal, and the team at Mad Cave Studios does an incredible job of bringing that to life in this first issue. I very much cannot wait to read more! Read Full Review

Comic Book Clique - Russell Hartman
May 08, 2026Dog Tag #1 doesn’t glorify war; it takes a look behind the curtain at war’s true face. The story of World War II has been told time and time again, but writer Mark Russell and the art team of PJ Holden and JP Jordan have brought a fresh perspective to one of the most horrific events in human history. If issue #1 is any indication, the journey of soldier Tom Fuller is trending towards being one of the best World War II stories we’ve had in a long time. Read Full Review

Fanlight Zone - Richard Coryell
May 06, 2026Dog Tag #1 brings an important historical story from World War II to life in its pages. The care that is put into keeping the historical story true to life, well expanding upon it with the fictional happenings, makes this story very cool. The promise of exploring even more post D-Day combat and stories as the series goes makes for some great potential for this series as it moves forward. If you like stories that are tied to history well also expanding into their own lore, this is the series for you. Read Full Review

Comic Crusaders - Al Mega
May 10, 2026Dog Tag #1 is thoughtful, haunting, occasionally darkly funny, and deeply human. It is not here to sell you a toy-soldier fantasy. It is here to sit you beside a man with a pen, a uniform, and a cracking conscience while the world burns around him. That is powerful storytelling, mi gente. WEPA with a lump in the throat. This is a strong, sobering debut from Mad Cave Studios, and if the rest of the six-issue series keeps this level of emotional honesty, Dog Tag could become one of the standout war comics of the year. Comic Watch - Theron Couch
May 06, 2026Dog Tag #1 is an unusual World War II story. The Dover setting allows for a fascinating character exploration. Russell does a good job combining a familiar concept–the young man waiting to go to war–with an almost existential musing about being so far removed from anything that feels real. It’s a very compelling read. Read Full Review

Get Your Comic On - Aaron Gillingham
May 07, 2026Dog Tag offers a perspective on war that rarely gets talked about, which, in turn, makes for a compelling read. Here, Russell is more concerned about brutal honesty and the unsung heroes rather than throwing you headfirst into the violence like most World War II media can get carried away with.
