Despite my lingering misgivings about the heavy political aspect of the book, and how I don't think it really works in a Canadian context, there's no doubt about it that this book is a fantastic piece of work, with a great script by Pak/Van Lente and extremely enjoyable artwork by the always-enjoyable Dale Eaglesham. Editor Mark Paniccia has truly assembled a grade-A team here, and it shows in the great finished product. Also, for those not in the know, the title of the issue, Born on the First of July, is a nice take-off on the classic film Born on the Fourth of July, which works because July 1st is Canada Day, analogous to the US' July 4th. This second issue of "Alpha Flight" contributes a great deal towards setting up the story and the premise for this series, but it does so at the sacrifice of a good story. Taken by itself, this issue is flat, but clearly, this is intended to be the second of eight chapters, so I am certain it is simply a lull in the story before the real action hits.
