Amazing Spider-Man #686 was another fantastic entry in the Ends of the Earth event. Dan Slott is putting on a clinic with this storyline that will be a contender for story and event of the year. He has been able to assemble all the chess pieces and throw in some curve balls to keep us on our feet. Now that he has made the story more personal for Spider-Man as it is revealed that Doctor Octopus is using Peters own tech I cant wait to see how the final showdown between the two turns out in the next issue. I can't say enough good things about Dan Slott, and you've heard/read them all before anyway, so I'll just say he's still kickin' it with the densely packed and entertaining scripting, while Stefano Caselli's art is plenty great, too. Ends of the Earth is almost over, and the stakes couldn't be higher. There is a lot of pressure on Slott to round off the storyline in both a timely and satisfying fashion " there are lots of story threads to conclude, such as Ock's final fate, and the cliffhanger he ends on this issue, but if the previous five issues are anything to go by, the fate of Spidey's world couldn't be in better hands. This is a great issue filled with a few surprises you won’t see coming, but I really wish Marvel would stay with the same artist for every story arc. Don’t get me wrong, I like Stefano Caselli’s illustrations, I just find it annoying when they swap artists all the time, it’s distracting and it takes you out of the story a little bit. Slott ups the action, the drama, and the fanboy moments throughout the issue, making it finally feel like the fun Spidey event I was hoping for. Unfortunately, It all comes a little late in the game. It seems too much time was spent on the wrong parts of the story. Everyone is obsessed with finding the cloaked satellites, and rightfully so, but that plot has moved forward at such a slow and awkward pace that it kills the momentum of the story. On top of that, there is a revelation squeezed in at the end that did not get the proper time, space, or setup it needed to be truly effective. Overall I love the art and think that Caselli did a great job as he usually does. The issue itself is an improvement on Part 4 and with Part 6 coming out in June as Ends of the Earth reaches its conclusion it'll still manage to have more of my attention and excitement that Avengers vs X-Men currently has. Still, there isn't long to go now, and there aren't any huge technical failures -- it's simply more hit than miss for me. The ending of this issue at least promises a battle royale worth coming back for, and in the end, where Spider-Man is concerned, even a miss for Slott is better than most. Read Full Review
