Stefano Caselli's artwork is sleek and cinematic, as always, giving the look of this title an almost Manga quality, which I find very refreshing to see in an American comic book. He's one of those rare artists whose work is genuinely a treat to see each and every time. He's tailor-made for Spider-Man. While we're getting closer to the rumored game-changer that is to be issue #700 and Spider-Man's 50th Anniversary, it has been quite a thrill seeing Dan Slott thoroughly enjoying himself writing this title. It certainly has been enjoyable for me. His next story arc, once again re-teaming with Humberto Ramos, poses the question, “Who Is Alpha?” I can't wait to find out, because I know it'll be something special. I think this arc has proven that Dan Slott is pretty darned good at writing Spider-Man. There have been some critics - particularly of the way Spider-Man reacts at the end of this issue, but that aside, he's doing a great job. I'm really looking forward to his new arc. One of the things he's doing so well is planting the seeds for the n+1 arc during the break issues. During the last issue where we were between arcs he showed that Morbius was experimenting on The Lizard and I think that's the arc coming up next. This continues to be a fun read and I think you should pick it up (but the next issues's probably going to be better for that than this one). Read Full Review

Slott writes so densely, and so urgently that he tends to leave you a little breathless, and it's hard to imagine the goofy bits with Mysterio at the beginning are in the same issue as this grisly demise of a cult favorite character like Sable. It's possible he's got a plan to get her out of there, but since he's been building this story for years now, the last great plan of Doc Ock, it had to have a lasting effect somehow, since burning the world is apparently the Phoenix's job over in Avengers vs. X-Men. The art from Stefano Caselli is also top notch, bringing the kinetic energy of Humberto Ramos' work without the distended angles, so it may be a bit more palatable for mainstream appreciation. Ends of the Earth comes to its end with a bang and a whimper; the bang from the comic, and the whimper from me as I realise that the story has come to a close. This concluding issue wraps everything up neatly, giving closure on pretty much every story point from the last five issues, as well as setting the stage for the epilogue issue. Whilst it doesn't reach the same level as Spider-Island due to the global scale of the storyline lacking the personal touch that Spidey works best with, this is a superb storyline, with this issue continuing that trend through to the end. "Amazing Spider-Man" #687 isn't the single greatest issue of the post-"Brand New Day" Spider-Man, but it is certainly a great sampler of what the current era of Spider-Man comics is all about. This is the conclusion of the bigscreen adventure "Ends of the Earth." Now things are going to narrow a bit in scope as Spider-Man tries to move forward from the tragic loss he experiences in this issue. Amazing Spider-Man #687 did not provide the best conclusion to an event but it was still a fun comic to read. Dan Slott characterization for the most part was as strong as always. All of the action is well choreographed and he leaves Spider-Man has me greatly anticipate what comes next. It is just too bad that how Doc Ock is taken down turned out to be a letdown compared to all the build-up the character got this past year. Even so, I look forward to picking the eventual hardcover to End of the Earth as it is strong event that every Spider-Man fan will want to read. Read Full Review

The story concludes with the revelation of what Doc Ock was truly trying to do and to say that it was an anti-climax would be an understatement. It would be easy to say that this is Slott's weakest arc but considering the quality of the rest it is easy to forgive him. Read Full Review

All in all it was still a very enjoyable series and I strongly recommend it to any Spider-Man fan. If you missed out on this series, hunting for the back issues is sometimes difficult, so maybe wait for the trade when it comes out, it makes a nice gift, all packaged neat & tight. Spider-Man, Silver Sable, Black Widow, and, yes, Mysterio take on the Avengers, but the whole battle feels off. Each Avenger takes their time attacking the group, and constant reference is made to how the Avengers are operating at reduced effectiveness, as if to sell the fact that these puny humans actually stand a chance against powerhouses like Thor and Red Hulk. Thor just took on the Phoenix in AvX, mind you. The battle ends with the most uninspired plot gimmick I've ever had the privilege of rolling my eyes at. The plot bends in these awkward ways so Spider-Man must ultimately confront Doc Ock alone, which proves to be the most underwhelming scuffle in recent memory. This is all punctuated by an apparent character death that anyone would be hard pressed to truly care about, much like the event as a whole. Read Full Review
