THE BIGGEST ULTIMATE EVENT YET! MARVEL'S GALACTUS VS. THE ULTIMATES
• The stunning conclusion of the biggest Ultimate event ever!!!
Cataclysm " The Ultimates' Last Stand #5 is the ending to the event that fans of the Ultimate Universe deserved. So much happened here that you can only get from the Ultimate Universe and only from someone like Bendis writing it. Call it dramatic or anti-climatic, but this is how you do a story about the end of the world, anything else you have gotten is a tease compared to this when no risk is taken. Now we are just left to see how these heroes who remain pick up the pieces in Survive. A new generation of heroes and Ultimates is upon us and the end of this story is only the start of a new to begin. Read Full Review
Cataclysm was fun, so it sucks to see it receive such a lackluster ending. Im sure well get our answers at some point, but it will come with a cost and more solicits for the future of a universe that should have just ended. The Ultimate universe is more convoluted than the 616, which defeats its original purpose. Why keep it around? Bring Miles over to the regular Marvel U and call it a day. Read Full Review
Worst of all, this issue doesn't even offer a satisfying conclusion to the conflict. No sooner does the battle wrap up and the survivors dust themselves off than the conclusion is at hand. The best we can hope is that the Survive epilogue one-shot can cap off Cataclysm in a more satisfying way, and maybe channel more of the emotion and drama that was so apparent in the tie-ins but in short supply here. Like so much of the entire "Cataclysm" saga, "Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand" #5 has moments of glory and even some brilliant ideas, but the execution is found wanting. While it has been spoiled for a while now, it comes as no surprise that there is still an Ultimate Universe following this story. What happens in it, who has survived to guard it and what new threats arise remain to be seen. One thing is perfectly clear though: it won't be Galactus. I just hope the stories to be told there are more compelling than this series has been. Read Full Review
Here's the thing about Cataclysm as a whole: it's good with moments of greatness. Spider-Man's and The Ultimates' tie ins are utterly wonderful, and the overall main story is a lot of fun, but when something has this much hype around it, it becomes incredibly hard to live up to it. This last issue of the story falls short of the hype and expectations of the readers, which is a bummer because this is a book fans were dying to see succeed. Hopefully, this reads much better in trade because the writing and the art didn't make this issue bad, the hype did. Read Full Review
With the conclusion of this event being somewhat of an entertaining mess, it is still however a huge and rather poorly-made finale that doesn't make the most of what it tries to do and change. It's a pity, but the characters, universe and concepts presented here deserved better. Read Full Review
In many respects, Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand #5 came up to the plate with the team already down by a dozen runs. If it occurred six years ago at a time when the Ultimate comics weren't so burned out by death and destruction, the impact would be much greater. But even without playing in unfair circumstances, the narrative lacked refinement. With so few characters contributing and the lack of progression in the story, it had little chance of resonating. In the end it just added to the damage Ultimate has already endured and any hope it offers rings hollow. Reed Richards claimed at the end of the story that by surviving this onslaught, anything was possible. He may be right to some extent, but for now those possibilities extend only to more death and more destruction and little hope of anything else. Read Full Review
Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand #5 is absolutely not worth your time, unless you like looking at exploding things. The Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man mini-series is worth a look, but otherwise wait for Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man and the All-New Ultimates to return properly in April. Read Full Review
