It's not that this was a bad book, it just doesn't have the "I need to read this" thing going for it. Everything just feels out of focus and random. On top of that it's really not new reader friendly at all, the Ultimate Universe was suppose to not be as complicated as the 50-70+ year history of the main Marvel U, but now I feel like it's even harder to follow. The Ultimates has everything it needs to be an exciting comic, but somewhere in the transfer from inception to product, the wheels fell off and the comic becomes nothing more than a mediocre entry. As a fan of the Ultimate universe, I'm interested to see the results of all the possible story developments, but if I weren't already familiar with the Ultimate U, I would pass on this comic. Then again, there is very little linking this version of the Ultimates to its former glories. No danger, no wit, no innovation. I hate to pour out and out scorn upon a title, but there has been so very little to recommend in the pages of Ultimate Comics Ultimates of late that I'm at something of a loss to offer much else. I will, once again, give Humphries the benefit of the doubt that a sharp incline in quality is just around the corner, but as each month in the series' company drags on, the less I can claim to truly believe it. Nick Fury is a whitewasher... And Death's Head hydra has Death's Head on their logo... Such a weird universe, such a nonsense... But it's not that boring at least and I like this artist.
