I like the premise of this series - Logan training Kitty Pryde at a time relatively early in their careers as X-Men. For this story arc however, Logan just kind of ditches Kitty in the woods like she's Gohan. Meanwhile, Wolverine gets caught up in some other story about... some werewolf lady. Not a fan of this issue in particular. Art isn't great... until the endingg as werewolf Wolverine doe more
Wolverine: First Class #10
Wolverine's claws and healing factor have helped him survive some of the most dangerous situations and locales. But what happens when dark magic transforms him into a werewolf? Guest starring Jack Russell, the Werewolf-by-Night!
I was hoping for something a little deeper or even darker given that Logan just tore out Daken's wrist claws. This issue just showed how meaningless that all was as it barely has affected Daken's character and he still has his fist claws.
Dark Wolverine #87
Betrayed by his father, cut off from his destiny, Daken now faces an uncertain future. What is he supposed to be now? With the pantheon of Marvel heroes stepping out of darkness and into the light, there seems only one choice... Parental Advisory ...$2.99
I am really digging the loose anthology structure of this series. Ruiz's art is great here. Writing was quite cliche, though it won me over, more or less. It's Wolverine vs. Al Capone at one point, so that was cool. Is Wolverine supposed to have metal claws here? That part was... well, whatever, we're having fun and I don't understand Logan's timeline at all anyways. Sabretooth was a welcome more
Savage Wolverine #20
Meet the sole survivor of the Valentine's Day Massacre - WOLVERINE!
Gangsters, bullets, babes, villains, heroes and murder!
What a lousy fake-out right at the start. Not a good sign of how painful this is all going to be. Still I guess Cloak's presence explains how the Daken part of the story ended nicely. I don't love this story arc but that was one hell of an ending that does stick with me positively.
Wolverine Origins #48
"RECKONING," CONCLUSION Revenge. It is what has motivated Wolverine for over a century. But now, with that revenge within reach...is it really what he wants? More importantly, is it really what he needs? A new era begins as Wolverine finally considers his future instead of his blood-stained past. Parental Advisory ...$2.99
Segovia's art really stands out compared to the Wolverine: Origins series in a generally good way (for this issue at least). It looks good but also some facial expressions and some of the action is a little iffy for my tastes. The writing is much more mid. The ending was weird. I thought Daken really got Romulus for a second and then he just... teleports away? Thanks to Logan? So strange, so more
Dark Wolverine #86
"RECKONING" PART 3 OF 4 For decades, Daken has waited for the moment that has now finally arrived. In one fell swoop, Daken plans to both destroy his father and achieve his destiny. The streets of Ankara run red with blood as Daken faces off against...Romulus! Parental Advisory ...$2.99
I was just warming up to Romulus in the first part of Reckoning. He's less fun here and kind of comes across as a bit of a chump. So much for building him up as an intimidating threat over in the Daken series.
Wolverine Origins #47
RECKONING PART 2 As the pieces begin to move, Wolverine's plan begins to tear apart at the seams--has Skaar, the son of Hulk, become compromised by Romulus' influence? Will the reluctant Cloak be there when Wolverine needs him?
Romulus was such a wiener in the stories I'd seen him in outside of Evolution so it's nice to have him actually be intimidating in something again, even if that is limited. I quite like the art even if faces and perspective are weird at times, and the writing in this comic works overall in building up this confrontation between Daken, Wolverine, and Romulus. The ending of this issue fell a littl more
Dark Wolverine #85
"RECKONING" PART 1 OF 4 It's time. After years of waiting in the wings, Daken now moves toward his destiny of becoming the new Romulus. But to do so, he must combine forces with his father, Wolverine...who has a much different goal in mind. Will Daken finally get what he's wanted his entire life? Or will he finally get what he deserves? Parental A...
This issue opens up really strong visually and in the text, with Logan being hunted by people in the Canadian wilderness with drugs that can actually harm him. Very stunning art and a nice, quiet, dark, emotional and bloody issue to end the series on. It is a little weird and I had to check it was even standalone, the way it kind of just plops you into the middle of a story, but I had a great ti more
Savage Wolverine #23
Wolverine versus the Wild West!
Norman's kind of been a chump this story arc so it is nice for him to show some real teeth here. Really dumb and weird ending where the guys Daken and Norman have been setting up are saved by Daken, only for him to kill them anyways.
Dark Wolverine #80
"My Hero," Part 4 (of 4) Norman Osborn's plan to improve Daken's public image has gone horribly wrong, resulting in the deaths of dozens of innocent people. Meanwhile, Daken's plan is moving along quite nicely... Parental Advisory ...$2.99
Action wasn't great and the art is pretty weird in this issue. Kind of childish which is a shame because Daken working as a Dark Avenger should be an interesting political thriller. This is not an interesting political thriller.
Dark Wolverine #79
"MY HERO" The unimaginable has happened-both Daken and Norman's plans have backfired! Now the victim of his own manipulations-beat almost to death by a gang of second-rate villains-Daken is forced to make an almost impossible admission: this "hero" thing is harder than it looks! But will digging himself out of the hole he's put himself in restore ...
This art is alright. I don't remember liking Dark Reign that much when it came out but this issue has at least something to offer of substance, even if it isn't a lot.
Dark Wolverine #78
As an Avenger, Daken is supposed to be one of the good guysÚ©to the public, anyway. But when a tape revealing his true colors is leaked onto the internet, Daken will be forced to clean up his act...and confront the possibility that being a hero might just be more difficult than being the villain! Parental Advisory ...$2.99
A full-fledged superhero battle against Roston that falls a little flat for me. Roston is a very boring character in spite of being in a good chunk of this series.
Daken: Dark Wolverine #19
Daken has his final battle with the villainous Marcus Roston! Guest-starring the Runaways!
More bad writing, but now with the Runaways. I don't like this artist on this run, either. It's neat to build on the Pride a little bit but it took us way too long to get to this point. At least Marcus Roston gets a cool moment as a villain.
Daken: Dark Wolverine #18
With the final battle for Hollywood approaching, Daken is still weakened and lacking his healing factor while Donna's forced addiction to the HEAT drug leaves him betrayed and alone. Can his enforced alliance with The Runaways lead him towards some form of redemption? And even with the teenagers' powers at his side, will it be enough to defeat the ...
I still find this incredibly lame and disengaging. Just painful writing, unbearable at times. For the Runaways being on the cover they're only introduced at the very end of the story...
Daken: Dark Wolverine #17
PRIDE COMES BEFORE IT PART 2 Guest-starring The Runaways! Daken's Hollywood empire has been ripped to pieces and, with his healing factor still damaged, he's desperate and running for his life.
I groaned at this one. Serious content warning as this comic shows off a lot of self-harm. Decent action at least, but I don't love this art and there's a lot of groan-worthy lines in the writing.
Daken: Dark Wolverine #16
The Pride Comes Before It: Part One. Daken's is suddenly the most wanted man in America and has the entire LAPD and the FBI on his tail! When the shadow king of the Hollywood Hills is revealed, can Daken save Donna Kiel when he's at his weakest? Maybe the better question is, does he even want to?
It's great to see Daken getting the short end of the stick for a change, he has become a junkie, lost his healing factor and his influence, chef's kiss.
The quality of this story arc has kind of been all over the place, but I think I liked Wrath more than I didn't. There really are some beautiful pages here, but this issue in particular is dialogue-heavy. Once we get to the final fight with the crazy guy though, it is appropriately brutal. Wrath as a whole is probably worth the read even if it is rough around the edges.
Savage Wolverine #17
Logan stands between an innocent family and a corrupt time!
What is the secret of Grand Rapids? And how is it connected to Logan?
Richard Isanove (THE DARK TOWER) concludes his most brutal tale in the life of Wolverine!
We're stepping back up in quality with some really engaging, well-drawn violence. It's pretty good even if it goes on a little long for my tastes.
Savage Wolverine #16
WRATH part 3 of 4. In a race against time, Logan must keep the children in his care away from the Enforcer. As the first of the dust storms to ravage the country bears down on South Dakota, Logan must decide which he can survive: his enemies or the black blizzard.
The boat voyage depicted on here could have been a good opportunity but isn't explored well in the art or the writing. A big step down from last issue.
Savage Wolverine #15
A routine rescue of a young girl opens up a web of intrigue for Wolverine.
Corrupt cops, a cross-country chase, and a mysterious conspiracy stands against Logan!
Richard Isanove (DARK TOWER) continues his most Savage tale of one man against the world!
Like the art, time period, and setting. It's Logan in prohibition times smuggling stuff in Canada, I found it quite unique and compelling. Wolverine's character is not very savage, though.
Savage Wolverine #14.NOW
"THE BOOTLEGGER"
SURVIVING THE BLACK ROLLERS! In the 1930s Dustbowl, Logan is a bootlegger carrying whiskey down from Canada, until he finds himself the accidental caretaker of a group of orphans whose family was targeted by the mob. Now Logan must choose between the anonymous life he's been meticulously building or stepping out into the spot...
