Claim: A Song of Ire and Vice #1 |

Claim: A Song of Ire and Vice is a comic book by Greg Wright that is based on the infamous tricking-tacking card game Claim. The comic itself explores the adventurous journeys that the two main characters go on as they navigate through the chaos of Unstablovakia. Unstablovkia has gone into war after King Ded drowned himself in a barrel of wine and left no heirs. Thus, it leads the five factions of the country to fight over the claim of the throne. Edwando The Wizard and his goblins who basically follow his cult of magical beliefs, Queen Butternut and her army of dwarfs, Ash The Lesser with the help of the doppelgangers, Lady Lumpse and the knights who pledged their loyalty to her message of love, and Lord Glimmer who has a well-funded army of the undead. The long-lost fabled twin nieces of the king are mentioned at the beginning but do not play a leading role until the end of the comic. The two main characters are mercenaries struggling to get hired during these rough times. Rob, a short and incompetent goblin, and his partner Dop, a tall and incompetent doppelganger. Since war has erupted in the country people from different factions are hiring mercenaries to kill their enemies. So, the “heroes” of this story are crossing paths with each of the five factions trying to get hired and get some riches. However, they end up not technically getting hired and causing chaos in each of these factions. The comic explores many different elements of a typical tavern story but in its unique way. The sense of humor and the corny jokes throughout the pages give the comic an enjoyable and interesting dynamic for the reader. As well, as the countless humorous attempts that Rob tries to make to propose to multiple female characters. The eye-catching graphics actually makes the reader want to read more and they transfer the humor shown throughout the comic into a physical form. However, the stupidity that is shown for both main characters is not truly accurate; since Dop saves Rob from life-threatening situations the majority of the time. Also, some of the names of some places and characters could have been well thought out; for example, the name choice of Unstablslovkia could have had a more creative process behind it. Although, these points do add to the ridiculousness, in a good way, and charming allure of the comic. Claim is a comic that may catch you by surprise. Perhaps, purely for the absurdity of it that it is actually enjoyable. The comic, while exploring typical tavern fantasy themes, distinguishes itself through its comedic elements. A lighthearted and entertaining read, Claim invites readers to divulge into a different world where humor is on top.
