Batman (2016) #1

Jun 20, 2016

After Batman Rebirth being mostly set up, Tom King shows with this stellar first issue of Batman why he's one of the best mainstream comic book writers working today for the big 2, definitely proving why he's a worthy successor of Scott Snyder, the writer behind Batman's newest legendary run. I love how clear David Finch's art is here, Matt Banning's inks are clear and crisp, with a great use of shadows that compliment Finch's art very well. This and Action Comics #957 are easily my favorite titles that sprang from DC Rebirth so far and I'm definitely back into the collecting DC Comics thing. My wallet bleeds.

It's crazy how Dan Abnett is responsible for my favorite titles from the big two right now: Titans and Hercules. What he's doing here is truly a great treatment for the character, one that I never cared before this run and just like he did with Guardians of the Galaxy, I feel that Marvel's Hercules could be epic if the Marvel Studios decides somewhere down the line to bring him to the big screen. Dan Abnett is easily one of the most underrated comic writers out there today, Marvel Comics and DC Comics are wasting time not getting him an exclusive deal and one of their flagship books. I love what he's doing with Titans at DC Rebirth, but the amount of detail and research that he did for this Hercules run is dripping from the page and as good as Tom King's Vision, Matt Fraction's Hawkeye or Jason Aaron's Doctor Strange. For the first time ever I'm taking Marvel's Hercules seriously, and I honestly could see this character getting the Marvel Studios treatment with great success if they choose to adapt the premise of this run. Hercules is Earth's first hero, trying to get back on his feet and be more than the running gag he became within the Marvel Comics history. A great little story about redemption and ancient Greek myths that I feel is sadly going under the radar for a lot of people. Abnett's work with DC is great, but here he's at his best, at the same level of his Titans/GotG stories and a LOT better than his Aquaman Rebirth first story. Luke Ross is killing it here as well, and I sincerely think that if they can keep up this quality for the whole run, both Tom King's Vision and Dan Abnett's Hercules should be contenders for an Eisner Award. It's that freaking good, really stoked to see where this goes next.
