New Avengers (2013) #21

Possibly one of the best comics I've read in a while. Hickman is on fire right now and in this issue he is blazing. For months now we see our heroes -all paragons of morality -struggling with hard decisions that will bring them over the edge. The final pages finally have them face those fears as they actually have to decide whether to cross the line or not. I was suspecting we would get a cop out but Hickman - like life - is not letting them off that easy. The final pages are really intense and well written and I won't spoil them here. The aftermath will leave them all with more hard choices, scars and the toughest task of all - look in their mirror.

Just when I thought issue #21 couldn't be topped, Hickman deals with the aftermath by having the "heroes" actually live with the consequences of their actions. In a medium where characters are treated as merchandise icons mostly that's something we don't see often. In fact, the scope of the Illuminati's actions is such that it should affect and change the characters far beyond the current arc and the title within which it is contained. So, Hickman doesn't shy away from the task. He handles each character with great accuracy and, yes, compassion. The heroes actually believe this is the end so their reaction is pretty much genuine and all too human - a Marvel staple. This time there is no Namor to make the hard choices. Or is there...? PS: Kev Walker is a great artist but he needs some time to find his pace and style on this book. I expect great things from him in the future.

Superior Spider-Man (2013) #30

Who knew? I was sad to see Otto go... Here's hoping all that's done with him the last months won't be forgotten so someone will bring back a generic Dr. Octopus down the line. Also, it's clear Dan Slott loves Spider-man and his mythos. Superior Spider-man has been Super Hero comics in its finest.
