Batman City of Bane The Complete Collection

May 17, 2022

This is a mess. For a book titled "City of Bane", he only appears around 3 times, Flashpoint Batman is the true villain of this book. It does a lot of jumping around between scenes, especially towards the end. Also, there's a big section that's just a pure Batman/Catwoman soap opera with terrible dialogue. If you want to read it, go ahead, but I'd save my money on this one.

Batman The Joker War

It's a fun standalone story that did its best with the scrap heap left by Tom King. The best thing it did was thankfully bring back Nightwing. There are some plot hole moments such as Joker's fate towards the end and a lack of logic at some points, but overall I recommend it.

Batman Fear State Saga

This was a fun read albeit with low points. There are some really bad issues in this where Batman takes a back seat in his own story to characters like Peacekeeper-01 & Poison Ivy. Peacekeeper has an arc that feels the same but different, and the whole "Queen Ivy" arc fell pretty flat for me. The Gardener was an unnecessary villain and wasn't needed at all. With its flaws I can still enjoy this, I'm always down for a Scarecrow story. It's not a must-read, but if you just want something to pass time, get this.

Batman: The Long Halloween Collected

This is a classic story and should be read by every Batman fan. It's a murder mystery with many familiar Bat-Rouges. This is also the most accepted origin of one of my favorite villains, Harvey Dent, AKA Two-Face. The only issue I had was the reveal of Holiday at the very end of the book. The series is a fun concept with each issue representing each holiday over the course of a year and seeing Gotham's Crime families is something here that's missing in most modern Batman stories. My personal favorite issues were Christmas (Issue 3), New Year's (Issue 4), and Punishment (Issue 13, Final). I absolutely recommend this as a can't-miss story and a masterpiece from Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale.
