While the Superman line is easily the "most improved" of the entire DC Rebirth relaunch, I feel like Phil Jimenez's work on Superwoman has flown under the radar. This little tale of Lana Lang and her dangerous powerset and the emotional toil it takes on her already existing personal demons has proven to be one of the most compelling DC titles offered. But, now Jimenez is gone,with future issues to be written by Kate Perkins. I assume the writer change is permanent. It might be interesting to see where this series goes from here, for however much longer it lasts, given its place near the bottom of the sales charts. I half wonder if Jimenez' meta-textual commentary this issue might have been a parting shot. Are BIG changes in the wings for this series? We'll have to wait and see, but with the coming prince increase to $3.99, something will have to change in order for me to stick around much longer. Read Full Review
This issue brings improvements to the Superwoman series, but it still feels like the reader doesn't have enough information about "Superman Reborn" and the DC Rebirth mystery to fully enjoy the story. Read Full Review
What I do know is that this issue was a fitting capstone to this arc. I was kind of lost. I thought it was kind of preachy. I still don't know when all this is happening in the current world. In some ways, I am happy this book is moving on. I can't help but be disappointed, especially considering the way it started. All that said, K. Perkins comes on as writer next issue. In the end, Superwoman #8 is all over the place. The story is confusing, the art is inconsistent, and I didn't have any fun. Sure, it's better than all seven previous issues, but that's not saying much. It's average at best, and that's being very generous. This comic make you cry for Lana. She is best Superman character.
This issue was an excellent goodbye to Phil Jimenez's run on this title. I have really enjoyed this book, and though I get why some consider it to be too "talky" and exposition filled, it felt like a return to an older story-telling style that I truly miss. It's nice not to read a book in 3 minutes, with nothing but splash pages and action on every page. Really too bad he's leaving. Hope Perkins can keep it going in a similar manner.
As we come to the end I'm finally able to come up with a written review. I've held off on doing one for this series for two reasons. The first is the seething disappointment I have with Jimenez over how poorly handled this series was. The second because I wanted to get a clear sense of perspective over what all went wrong.
Let's start with the writing.
Every page is filled with text. Characters dump long exposition into every panel. You would think a life long penciller like Jimenez would no how bad that is. And worse, this isn't Jimenez first writing gig. He's done ongoing series for years and this is par for the course. He hasn't improved and he continues to ramble as the series goes on.
