American Legends #5
Nov 26, 2014 |
Overall, American Legends was disappointing. While I was hoping for an interesting retelling of some classic, American folklore, what I got was a mash-up of trite stories with all the inherent racial stereotypes and proselytism of the old stories, but none of the charm. Combined with lackluster writing and sloppy artwork, this is definitely a title to pass on. |

Ant-Man (2015) #1
Jan 5, 2015 |
Overall, even though it wasn't exactly action-packed, I thought this was a fun read. I'm looking forward to seeing where these guys take the title now that they've established a good base, and how much of the character's previously established history will leak in since they haven't exactly shied away from referencing the past. Perhaps most of all, though, I'm particularly interested to see if this new Ant-Man comic parallels the film as much as I expect it to. My prediction is that the timeline will be off, but the content will likely sync up nicely. Either way, this new series looks like it might be a great place to get newcomers into the Ant-Man title (especially if you'd like to avoid that whole Hank Pym: Wife-Beater nonsense). |

Batgirl (2011) #37
Dec 10, 2014 |
The highlight of this particular issue was her depiction of a band of no-name criminals. Tarr's artwork for this group of women threw me, unexpectedly, back into my childhood. These ladies could have easily stepped right out of an episode of Jem and the Holograms (much more-so than the artwork I've seen for the actual Jem comic coming out next year from IDW), and I can't begin to describe how happy that made me. |

Batgirl (2011): Endgame #1
Mar 18, 2015 |
As part of the Endgame storyline, Batgirl: Endgame is a good read that helps illustrate the scope of The Jokers scheme nicely. If youre not following the Endgame story though, no one could blame you for skipping this issue. If, however, youre as big a Babs fan as I am, this issue is certainly good enough to add to your collection. |

Marvel Super Hero Spectacular #1
Oct 9, 2015 |
Super Hero Spectacular isnt exactly spectacular, but for a childrens comic its not half bad. Personally, I prefer comics that dont go quite so far to drive a lesson home. Even as a kid I often tuned out when my cartoons hit that obvious moral-of-the-story point, and I imagine a lot of kids today do as well. If, however, youre looking for a fun comic with your kids favorite Marvel super heroes in it that is age appropriate, gender non-specific, and takes a moment to highlight the ways kids can do good in their community without using violence, then this may be the comic for you. |

Orphan Black #1

The comics should be a place where we can go deeper into the story; where the writers can really sink into the meat of a character/storyline or show us some of the adventures of the supporting cast without having to worry about the time and budget constraints of a television episode. Unfortunately, that doesnt appear to be what were getting with this miniseries, and that makes me sad. |

I cannot recommend this series enough, especially to young adults. These books are going places and touching on topics that we deserve to see more of in our modern day comics, and theyre managing to do so with unmistakable, ingratiating sincerity. |

Toe Tag Riot #1
Nov 26, 2014 |
Toe Tag Riot is meant to be tongue-in-cheek, and considering the antagonist being injustice and a cameo from a celebrity musician, theres no doubt thats an accurate description. With a base layer of good dialogue punctuated by sound artwork, however, this run is shaping up to be a keeper. |
