Man's Best #1 provides an emotionally engaging and heart-tugging science fiction story. Staring three sweet and delightful pets, Pichetshote and Lonergan, chart an exciting new story in the debut issue. Maybe we don't need to travel to the stars to find humanity; we only need to look at our pets. Read Full Review

By so wonderfully juxtaposing the pure existence of cats and dogs with the unknowable vastness of space, Pichetshote and Lonergan successfully evoke the excitement and fun you felt as a child, looking at the night sky clearly for the first time and dreaming about the fun you could have dancing between the stars. Man's Best#1 is a truly wonderful debut issue, with an immense degree of heart, hope, and action, sure to draw any reader in and keep them coming back for more. Read Full Review

Nerd Initiative - Mickey Smith Mar 20, 2024

To put into simplest terms, this is the science fiction version of Homeward Bound. Athos, Porthos, and Lovely provide a lot of heart and comedy that lightens up the dark and sort of depressing tale of the humans traveling the stars. Jesse Lonergan's artistic creations are fresh and interesting, somehow increasing what makes these animals so relatable. The action scenes raise the stakes and goes from enjoying comedic tropes to feeling pride in these three as the battle the unknown to find their guardians. I highly recommend this for anyone interesting a light hearted, fun story that doesn't take itself too seriously. Read Full Review

Pets in space? Yes, please! As a dad of 2 rescue fur babies (Bella & Julep <3) & someone w/ a lifelong interest in space, I launched headfirst into Man’s Best #1 by Pornsak Pichetshote & Jesse Lonergan from BOOM! Studios, and it was all systems go for this debut issue! Pichetshote instantly creates a connection w/ the heart of the story: the unwavering loyalty & love between a person & their pet(s).

The story follows Doc, a human scientist, & her 3 emotional support animals - Athos, the feline leader of the trio, Porthos, the affable/goofy Golden Retriever sidekick, and Lovey, a gruff but loyal Boston Terrier. When their research spaceship crashes on a strange new world, the unlikely animal heroes find themselves on a mission t more

A choppy and scattered start for Man's Best, with sanctimonious and complacent dialogue coming from the humans, while the animals quarrel with each other, desperate for some characterization, and with very limited success. Then the animals go about destroying stuff they don't understand, making the dialogue at the beginning even more sour. I'm sure the plot will justify their actions but it fails to be entertaining. The artwork is OK but for a book that depends so much on cool machinery/mecha/tech designs it was lacking. The tech stuff looks uninspired and forgettable. The writing is unfortunately atrocious. I'll pass this one.
