Baltimore investigates a small town in Estonia where the Red King has been seen. But he has little luck getting the townsfolk to speak with him, and a farmhouse full of broken, bloodied bodies is his only lead.
And so the hunt for the Witch begins. There are oodles of familiar tropes here, some may annoy, some are fresh. But this comic is filled with the finest pickings from good horror comics: the dead rising, hideous creatures that go krak, ravens, churches, graveyards…the list is endless and the art work is clean and bright. I loved the creature burning on page 10. The look of the comic reminds me of the nights under the blankets reading horror comics as a kid. While the art has its moments of unevenness, Mignola and Golden seem to have stepped up immensely in this issue. Not only is the tension and suspense better constructed, but there are a number of moments of dialogue that are really fantastic. It is great to see this series when it pops up periodically, and the somewhat subdued opening called into question whether the story of Lord Henry Baltimore had run its course. But, after issue #2 of The Witch of Harju, Mignola and Golden prove that they have compelling stories for this universe. In the final act of the issue, the story expands and the dark magic that appears to be at work, and this evil that has come to the town may truly make for a spectacle next month. Read Full Review

Still, if this weren't following Chapel of Bones, I would have assumed this was a side story in the vein of Dr. Leskovar's Remedy, which was a fun story, but it had no real impact on the ongoing plot. With the expanded cast, I was hoping for some character development, something to sink my teeth into, but that hasn't happened yet. So far it's been quite light. You get a simple origin story for the witch and get to see a couple of demons pop out of zombie chests like the scene from Alien. Other than that it's a pretty forgettable issue. Read Full Review
