Spike departs from the ruins of Sunnydale—and all those memories—with a demon who wants desperately to return to her home dimension. But with the loss of magic, her connection is lost. Spike, ever the hero, offers to help this mysterious damsel in distress in her journey to find any remnants of magic that might reconnect her to her world.
I am glad that this story still falls within the full "season" of Buffy. The characterizations were spot on, and I could picture James Marsters actually voicing Spike while reading this issue. This story could not have been told on TV at all, partly due to a Buffy story without the Slayer would not fly but also the special effects for the sentient bugs, their bug space ship, and a succubus going to Easter Island would use up much of their budget. These are stories that definitely belong in comic form " the deviations, the character changes (anyone remember Dawn as both a giant and a centaur from Season 8?)" This could not have been done on TV. Well, it could have been, but then Buffy would only be 12 episodes a season to account for the budgets. Overall, issue #4 is a vast improvement on the previous 2 installments, especially with Lee on board to draw Spike and Morgan. Their facial expressions are expressive to a hilarious intent in certain panels, and it definitely helps Gischlers script come to life. With Spikes loyal bug minion, Frisky gearing up to take action against Morgan, heres hoping the conclusion to the series will lead to something significant to the "Season 9" arc, and not something anticlimactic.
