For a Groo newb like myself, hopping onto issue #1 is an enjoyable romp, one that serves as a refreshing palate-clenser from the ceaseless onslaught of superhero books that too often fail to entertain on a level that Friends and Foes accomplishes so effortlessly. Its strength is found in the skill of its creators, whose collusion works so magnificently that the final product is nothing less than beautiful. It is a beautifully-cartooned, smartly-written, lighthearted and enjoyable adventure book that also happens to be very, very hilarious. Groo as a series is one that does work in a certain pattern and structure and having read so much of it over the years, even with a lengthy gap, it hasn't changed. And that's a good thing. This is a series that's fun with its story, thoroughly engaging in the style of the dialogue and just a treasure to pore over and look at all the detail and quirks of the artwork. Aragones style really hasn't changed much over the decades because what he does works and works so well. It's detailed, quirky and each page has multiple stories that it could tell with what's in there. The focus on Ahax here at the start is definitely a good choice as adventures at sea present their own quirks and we definitely get that with some really enjoyable material. I do think Groo is still something of an acquired taste, but it's one I acquired years ago and continue to love. Read Full Review

The writing and dialogue is great and the art fits the tone of the story as well. It's very cartoony and looks like what you'd find in newspaper comics strips. Witty, charming, and adventurous, this is a comic any fan should be checking out. I'm looking forward to next month's escapades with Groo. Read Full Review
Perfect start. Smart and funny premise, a plot with many twists and turns, hilarious dialogue and gorgeous art by Sergio. I don't see how this maxi-series can get better from here but I wouldn't be unhappy if it does. Buy it and see for yourself.
