ROTWORLD: THE RED KINGDOM part two!
Animal Man #14 is my pick of the week. The story is perfect, and the art slip ups somehow feel more forgivable. Read Full Review
Overall it's a great read and will keep you excited for what's to come in for the next installment of Rot World! Read Full Review
Since when does impaling a zombie produce a "THOOM" sound? Ignoring that, Jeff Lemire continues to develop his oddball cast of characters, borrowing more than one from his amazing Justice League Dark series. Black Orchid and her mysterious connection to both the Red and Green proves to be the most interesting of the bunch. Now I'm dying to know more about the Taproot Project, whatever that is. Lemire has built a fascinating and disturbing world with Swamp Thing writer Scott Snyder, and as the crossover event builds towards a larger story, each chapter never fails to be inventive, wild, and extremely gross. All in all I feel like I am once again invested in the story of Buddy Baker; and I wish him all the best in it. I hope Lemire prolongs the travelling aspect of the book so we get to see more of the environment. However, I am now confident that whatever path is chosen, it will most probably be the correct one. Animal Man has consistently been one of DCs most well rounded series and issue #14 is just another notch in belt for Lemire and Pugh. This is a creative team that has been firing on all cylinders as of late and their venture into Rotworld has amped things up in a big way. As if there was ever any doubt, this issue is a must buy! Even though all the elements are here for an action packed and fun ride, the issue lacks the emotional meat the title usually provides. It looks great and Pugh does depict one intense battle sequence, but Lemire hasn't instilled any real character into Buddy's comrades so no matter the stakes there is no tension. Plot elements feel familiar and although the cliffhanger is unexpected and fun, the Rotworld story seems a bit bland. But with Maxine alone the book still manages to entertain. Lets hope next issue's narrative and character work can match the visuals on display here. Read Full Review
Highly uneven art and a story losing its momentum results in a mostly average read overall. Read Full Review
I must admit with this title in particular, I'm already eager to see what "Animal Man" will serve up post-"Rotworld." It's nice to know this story (which has built up since the series' debut) is heading towards a conclusion. Even a slightly lacking issue of "Animal Man" is ultimately still worth reading. I feel that this series has always just been consistently "good," with a few great moments interspersed, and this issue continues that trend.
